Thinking about getting high? Being asked by your friends to try something new? Confused about the messages you are getting from your parents, friends, the media? Well here’s the straight dope on some common drugs you might come across in our area:

Marijuana | Opiates | Ecstacy

Marijuana | top

Common Names: pot, weed, grass, thai stick
Active Ingredient: THC

Common effects:
Effects can differ for person to person, and depend on the situation and mood of the used.

What some users say it makes them feel:

  • mood lift
  • relaxation, reduced stress
  • creative or deep thinking
  • sensations intensified
  • pain relief
  • increased appetite

Some negative effects that often occur:

  • Nausea (especially when combined with other drugs or alcohol)
  • Coughing, or breathing problems
  • Short term memory loss during and after frequent use
    racing heart, agitation, feeling tense
  • appetite stimulated (overeating)
  • mild to severe anxiety
  • panic attacks
  • headaches
  • long term memory loss after chronic use
  • dizziness and confusion
  • fainting (with lower blood pressure)
  • paranoid and anxious thoughts
  • psychological dependence
  • clumsiness, lack of coordination, higher risk of injury
  • through falls, cuts etc.
  • can trigger or make worse any pre-existing mental disorders

Opiates| top
Oxycodone, Oxycontin, Percocet, Tylenol 3’s

Common Names: Oxys, T3s, 20s, 40s, OC, Oxycotton
What is it:Opiates are used primarily for the treatment of pain and are a derivative of morphine.

Common Effects:

  • suppresses physical and emotional pain
  • euphoria (sensation that things are wonderful)
  • drowsiness
  • lethargy (not having energy)
  • difficulty in concentrating
  • anxiety and fear in some users
  • constricted pupils
  • blurred vision
  • impaired night vision
  • cough reflex suppressed (less able to cough)
  • slightly reduced respiratory rate.
  • nausea and vomiting;
  • constipation;
  • loss of appetite;
  • slight drop in body temperature;
  • sweating;
  • prickly or tingling sensation on the skin (particularly after intravenous injection).

Risks
The risk of overdose is very high. There is also a very high risk of both psychological and physical dependency.

Ecstacy| top

Common Names Ecstasy; E; X; XTC; Rolls; Beans; Adam
What is it?A popular recreational psychoactive, sold in the form of ecstacy tablets. It makes users feel increased empathy and emotion, keeps people awake for longer times and causes the sense of euphoria (feeling that things are wonderful).

Caution:
Ecstasy tablets are often impure, and contain other damaging chemicals.

Some users report these effects:

  • increase in hypothermia, dehydration (most common reason for death or illness due to ecstacy use)
  • drinking too much water
  • extreme mood lift
  • increased communication
  • more energy
  • feelings of comfort and belonging with others
  • increased enjoyment of music
  • increased sensitivity to light and sound
  • urge to hug and kiss people

Some less positive consequences include:

  • unintended emotional or sexual bonding
  • tendency to say things you might regret later
  • mild to extreme jaw clenching, tongue and cheek chewing, teeth grinding
  • difficulty concentrating
  • short term memory loss, confusion
  • muscle tension
  • inability to reach orgasm, or get an erection
  • nausea, vomiting
  • dizziness, headaches, loss of balance
  • crashing after coming down (feeling very depressed)
  • possible psychological crisis requiring hospitalization
  • liver toxicity (rare)
  • risk of death due to injury or overheating

Some reports are now beginning to show that there may be a long-term consequence of depression or mental illness after the repeated use of ecstacy. This is thought to be related to the depletion of the endorphins responsible for making us feel well and happy.
