Having a Safe Party

Party Tips

If you are a guest at the party:

  • Make sure that someone knows where you are in case of an emergency.
  • Make arrangements for a ride home with your parents if necessary. Have your parents sign a "Contract for Life". Call the Thunder Bay District Health Unit for a copy.
  • Go to the party with a friend who will stay sober. He/She can keep an eye on you and make sure you stay safe.
  • Make sure you hold onto your food/drinks, and never accept food or drinks from anyone else. If the host is mixing your drinks, watch him/her do it.
  • Make a plan ahead of time on how you are going to get home. NEVER get into a car (or truck) with a driver that has been drinking or using drugs!

If you are the host of the party:

  • Have a theme to the party. This gives your guests something other than alcohol to think about.
  • Don't drink, you are responsible for your guests.
  • Serve food and non-alcoholic beverages. Try the mocktails recipes.
  • Do not allow people to serve themselves.
  • Don't serve any "doubles".
  • Don't plan dangerous activities when your guests have been drinking (i.e. skating, skiing, snowmobiling, swimming, etc.).
  • Develop a plan ahead of time to deal with guests who have had too much to drink.
  • Make sure you know how everyone is going to get home from the party - prepare for overnight guests.
  • Stop serving alcohol a few hours before the party is over - bring out more food and non-alcoholic beverages.
