Alcohol & Your Body

What Alcohol does to your body

A Drink is a Drink is a Drink:

12 oz. of Beer = 5 oz. of Wine = 1½ oz. of Spirits

Don't be misled by appearances, a bottle of beer, a glass of wine, and a shot of spirits (i.e. Vodka, Rum, Whiskey, etc.) all have the same alcohol content.

What does Alcohol do to your body?

Although most people don't think of alcohol as a drug, that is exactly what it is. Specifically, alcohol is a depressant. This means that although it can (after a few drinks) make you feel more alert, it will eventually work to slow all of your body's functions and put you in a coma.

The specific effects that alcohol has on the body are very closely related to the blood alcohol level (BAL). The BAL is the concentration of alcohol in the blood, and is often seen written as a percentage (i.e. 0.05%, 0.2%, etc.)

Also, in the average adult, alcohol is metabolized at the rate of about 2/3 of a regular beer an hour. However, this rate can vary a great deal from person to person, depending on factors such as: the usual amount of alcohol they drink, health, gender, etc. In general though, this means that it takes about an hour for the effects of a single beer to "wear off".

How different BALs effect your body shows you what effect alcohol will have on your body as your blood alcohol level (BAL) increases.
